Foreword

As I started reading Kevin Brett’s, The Way of the Martial Artist: Achieving Success in Martial Arts and in Life,
the first thing that jumped into my mind was the word, KISS. No, not the awesome heavy metal band that originated in
the early 70’s with co-founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, but the acronym K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid), or
as it is also referred to; Keep It Short & Sweet.

Now I know you are asking yourself, “What does K.I.S.S. have to do with this book?”  Well that is quite an easy
question to answer as the entire premise of this book is to “Keep It Short & Sweet.” It refers to each one of the dozens
upon dozens of various principles and concepts that the author discusses in relationship to how they can directly
improve various facets of your martial arts skills, which in turn can also indirectly (and in some cases directly) improve
various facets of your normal day-to-day life.

Kevin states in the preface of his book, “I do not know all that I would like to about the topics in this book, simply that
they require further study by all of us.” What exactly does he mean by that? Well, simply put, Kevin takes every
principle and concept needed in order to become a proficient and skilled martial artist and explains, in very simple
terms, why each one of them is so important to your martial arts training. Any of these many valuable topics is worthy
of a book unto itself, but Kevin encourages you to use this book as a road map and a guide to seek out those
resources which will give you all of the information that you may require on each individual topic.

What makes this book worth reading and ultimately keeping you ask? Well, the answer is quite simply… simplicity
itself. This book does not teach you how to punch, kick, block, throw, or any other of the multitudes of actual physical
techniques you will find in the various martial arts. Instead, Kevin provides you with a comprehensive framework of the
numerous principles and concepts that you will need to understand in order to become the best martial artist that you
can be. Use this book to guide your further research on the various principles and concepts that he discusses. Then
combine that research with intense study and training in order to obtain the benefits discussed in this book. If you do
so, over time you will see a dramatic improvement not only in your ability as a martial artist, but also in your character
as a human being.

In the well over twenty-five years that I have been involved in the martial arts, I have literally had several hundred
different martial arts books pass through my hands. Of those hundreds of books, most landed on the garbage heap.
Some were studied for a time and then sold, and a precious few rated a permanent place in my personal library. Along
with those titles that I currently have in my library, I now add Kevin Brett’s,
